Youth Engagement Ambassadors

Supporting young people through connection, engagement and positive community presence.

Thrive & Connect delivers relationship-based Youth Engagement Ambassador services across Cairns and Far North Queensland.

Our Ambassadors provide a trusted, youth-focused presence within public and community spaces where young people naturally gather. Through calm engagement, relationship-building and consistent interaction, they help young people feel welcomed, connected and positively supported within the environments they use.

Public spaces can provide important opportunities for early connection with young people who may be experiencing disengagement, social isolation, school refusal, emotional complexity, family challenges, or limited access to positive support networks and activities.

Our approach focuses on meeting young people where they are at — building trust over time, strengthening connection and identifying opportunities for further mentoring, programs, activities or additional support where appropriate.

As young people become more positively connected to the people and spaces around them, public environments also become calmer, safer and more welcoming for the broader community.

What We Do

Our Ambassadors operate within public and community spaces where young people naturally gather, providing a consistent, proactive and relationship-focused presence.

Working collaboratively with local stakeholders, retailers, security teams, centre staff, councils and community organisations, Ambassadors help identify:

  • where young people are gathering

  • when additional engagement or support may be beneficial

  • emerging tensions or situations that may have the potential to escalate

  • opportunities to connect young people into mentoring, programs, activities or additional support pathways

Ambassadors engage directly with young people in real time through conversation, guidance, mentoring and positive social interaction. This allows support and connection to occur early, within everyday environments, before issues become more significant.

Importantly, our Ambassadors are not security or enforcement personnel. Their role is to build trust, strengthen connection, support positive engagement and contribute to safer, more welcoming community spaces through relationship-based practice.

Where We Work

Youth Engagement Ambassadors are designed for public and community environments where young people and the broader community naturally intersect.

This can include:

  • shopping centres and retail precincts

  • public gathering spaces and community hubs

  • community events

  • transport and transit environments

  • entertainment and recreational precincts

  • council and place-based community safety initiatives

Programs are adapted to the environment, stakeholder needs and the young people involved.

Outcomes

The Youth Engagement Ambassador model supports outcomes for both young people and the broader community.

This can include:

  • increased connection and positive engagement for young people

  • earlier identification of support needs and pathways into mentoring or programs

  • improved emotional regulation, communication and community participation

  • calmer and more welcoming public environments

  • reduced escalation and conflict

  • improved confidence for staff, retailers and security teams

  • stronger relationships between young people, stakeholders and community

When young people feel connected, respected and supported, positive outcomes are experienced across the wider environment.
